How to calculate your GPA
- Add each course with its letter grade and its credit hours (most semester courses are 3 or 4 credits).
- Mark Honors and AP/IB courses if you want your weighted GPA.
- Your unweighted and weighted GPA update instantly.
GPA is a credit-weighted average: each grade is converted to points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on), multiplied by the course's credits, then divided by the total credits. A 4-credit A counts more than a 1-credit A.
Weighted vs unweighted GPA
An unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale for every class. A weighted GPA rewards harder classes: a common convention adds 0.5 points for Honors and 1.0 for AP or IB, so an A in an AP class counts as 5.0. Colleges often recalculate GPA their own way, so report what your school's transcript shows.
What score do I need on my final?
Use the "Final grade needed" tab. The formula is:
Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − Final weight)) ÷ Final weight
Example: you have 84%, the final is worth 25% and you want a 90%. (90 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 108%. That's not possible with the final alone, so it's time to ask about extra credit.
Converting international grades to GPA
Applying to a US college or scholarship with grades from another country? The "International to GPA" tab gives two estimates: a simple percentage conversion, and one adjusted for your country's passing grade, which is usually closer to what credential evaluators report. For official applications, schools typically require an evaluation from a service such as WES or ECE.
Frequently asked questions
What is 83 percent as a letter grade?
On the standard US scale, 83% is a B, worth 3.0 points on the 4.0 GPA scale. An 80–82% is a B- (2.7) and 87–89% is a B+ (3.3).
What GPA is a 90 percent?
A 90% is usually an A-, worth 3.7 on the 4.0 scale. You need 93% or more for a full A (4.0). Schools without plus and minus count 90% as an A.
How do I calculate my GPA out of 4.0?
Convert each class grade to points (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0), multiply each by the class credits, add them up and divide by the total credits.
Is a 3.5 GPA good?
On the unweighted 4.0 scale, a 3.5 is roughly an A-/B+ average and is considered strong at most schools. Competitive programs often look for 3.7 or higher.
Do I include pass/fail classes in my GPA?
Usually not. Pass/fail courses typically do not count toward GPA, though a failing grade may. Leave them out unless your school says otherwise.
How many credits is a class?
Most college semester courses are 3 or 4 credits, labs are often 1. In high school, a full-year class is often 1 credit. Use whatever your transcript shows.
Is this GPA conversion official?
No. It is an estimate to help you plan. Colleges may recalculate your GPA, and international applicants usually need an official credential evaluation.
